Mohamed Assani is a sitarist and composer who creates original music for film and television. He trained in Composition for Film and television at Berklee College of Music, bringing together his formal studies in screen composition with deep roots in South Asian classical music and explorations of Western classical, jazz, ambient and contemporary sounds.
His screen credits include a sitar performance in Deepa Mehta, in Profile, a short film directed by Nettie Wild and produced by the National Film Board of Canada.
His short music film Lullaby for Guli, directed by Dallas Sauer, has received international festival recognition, including three finalist placements at the 2023 Berlin FilmHaus Festival and an Official Selection at the 2023 International South Asian Film Festival (iSAFF). The film has also been featured at the 2023 Illume Festival at Toronto’s Aga Khan Museum and screened at the 2025 Sundar Prize Film Festival in Surrey, British Columbia.
He is currently composing original music for the documentary I, Migrant, further expanding his work in cinematic storytelling. I, Migrant, which is due to be released in 2027, follows people pursuing the promise of a new life while confronting the sacrifices, pressures and unexpected realities of migration.
Drawing on a rich and diverse musical vocabulary, Mohamed creates evocative, original compositions that bring depth, atmosphere and emotional resonance to visual storytelling.
